Are you wondering whether electromagnetic radiation can harm your health? Electromagnetic (EM) radiation is a form of energy that is all around us. These unwanted signals can be present in the forms of radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, and gamma rays. The electromagnetic radiation may disturb the functioning of electronic circuits and even damage its components. Besides that, the Electromagnetic Field (EMF) generated from telecommunication, electricity, appliances, medical equipment, and many other apparatus can impact our health. The electromagnetic radiation refers to the waves of the electromagnetic field, carrying electromagnetic radiant energy. It includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is the result of an electric or magnetic field that may cause a device to malfunction. It is this interference that affects the proper functioning of a device. With the increasing sources of Electromagnetic Field (EMF), the health of human beings can be at risk. The radiation from telecommunication and electrical appliances that we use in our daily life may pose health hazards to humans. These latest technological devices have become an indispensable part of our lives. But according to researchers, high exposure to EMF may result in a higher risk of health issues like cancer, brain tumors, and other health problems.
Types of EMF

EMFs occur naturally and also come from manmade sources. The radiation can be either ionizing or non-ionizing. Low-level radiation, also called non-ionizing radiation, is mild and thought to be harmless to people. The sources of non-ionizing radiation are cellular phones, microwave ovens, Wi-Fi router, MRI machines, and power lines that send out low-level radiation. Ionizing radiation, on the other hand, is high-level radiation, which is in the form of ultraviolet rays from the sun and X-rays from medical imaging machines.

Impact on Human Health

There’s no strong research suggesting that EMF negatively impacts human health. However, it’s believed that exposure to high-level EMF may cause neurological and physiological problems by disrupting human nerve function. It is noteworthy here, that normally people don’t get frequently exposed to high-frequency EMFs. One of the main sources of EMF is our smartphone. Over the years, the use of mobile phones has increased considerably. In some studies, it was found that cellphones may increase the risk of cancer. However, no research suggested that there was a strong connection between cell phone usage and cancer in the research subjects. The low-frequency EMFs, on the other hand, may cause various neurological and psychiatric problems, affecting people’s sleep and mood.

EMFs from your cell phone and appliances are unlikely to cause any adverse health effects. But even though the effects of EMF are not catastrophic, people are advised to take the necessary precautions to minimize their exposure to EMF. Most gadgets and appliances manufactured by reputable brands are designed with EMI/RFI shielding to control the emission of radiation. To check EMFs in your home, you may use an EMF meter but remember their efficacy is limited. The intensity of radiation decreases as you increase your distance from the object emitting these waves.
