Sometimes, even after following a proper skin care routine, you notice dark spots on your face. They can be frustrating, since, even on a clear face, dark spots draw a lot of attention. And, so, you slather make up to cover them up, but for how long? We say, no more. Here are some natural skin beauty tips that will help you fight dark spots without having to torture your skin with all those chemical peels and treatments.

Why do they appear?

Dark spots are formed at the places where our skin produces more amounts of melanin than the rest of the face. This happens when the skin in the particular area is damaged. There can be several causes for dark spots including hyper-pigmentation, excessive sun exposure, hormonal imbalance, skin disorder, liver problems, and the most common, acne scarring.

10. Onion and garlic

Both garlic and onion have incredible compounds (including sulfur – just like the antibiotics) that fight infections and boost your immune system. Onion is also acidic in nature which helps in bleaching skin naturally. Also, it has antioxidants which are good for skin’s collagen matrix.

How to use it?

Take half an onion (red onion for best results), medium sized, and  6-7 coves of garlic. Make a paste and using a cotton swab, apply on the dark spots. Keep it on for 5 minutes before rinsing it off. Do this twice a day. Try using organic onions and garlic.


9. Green tea

Green tea has very potent anti-oxidant properties due to which it can be used to lighten dark spots on your face. The anti-oxidants in green tea not only help with the free radical formation but also, helps the body in producing healthier collagen. In addition, the vitamin K in green tea helps lighten dark circles under the eyes.

How to use it?

Take a green tea bag, put it into a cup of hot water like you’d normally do to make your tea.  Let the water saturate with the green tea extracts. Now use this solution, with the help of cotton swabs, apply over the dark spots. Do this 4-5 times a day. You can also use green tea for mixing your favorite face packs.


8. Lemon

Lemon is perhaps the most basic and most simple remedy that can be used to treat dark spots and pigmentation. It is rich in vitamin C which is why it acts as a good bleaching agent. Although lemon can be very acidic, so people with sensitive skin are advised to use diluted lemon juice on their faces.

How to use it?

Take some fresh lemon juice, using a cotton swab, apply this juice on the dark spots and let it rest for about 5 minutes. Wash it off with normal water.


7. Tomato

Citrus fruits contain abundant amounts of Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. Since tomato is also acidic in nature, it can help slough off the top layer of skin without causing damage. Tomato affects faster than any other natural homemade remedy without any side effects. Regular use will help completely remove the patches from your face.

How to use it?

  • You can use fresh tomato juice on your face to lighten dark spots easily. Apply the juice on your face and leave it for 5 minutes. Rinse it off with normal water.
  • Take a tablespoon of sandalwood powder, add 1 table spoon of tomato juice and 1 tablespoon of lime juice. Apply this paste and keep it on for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water.


6. Nutmeg mask

For a nutmeg face mask, you’ll need brown sugar, some coconut milk and some powdered nutmeg. Brown sugar is high in glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is found in many chemical peels because of its certain properties which are known to improve melasma. Coconut milk is high in lactic acid, which is also a great way to fade dark spots. Both lactic and glycolic acids are able to remove the topical layer of infected skin and help in reducing hyper-pigmentation and melanin production.

How to use it?

Take 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon coconut milk and 1 teaspoon of nutmeg. Mix them together to make a paste. Apply this mask onto your face and let it sit for at least 5 minutes, then, wash it off with luke warm water. Make sure to apply a sun screen afterwards.


5. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a rich source of anti-oxidants which helps to remove free radicals and gives skin whitening appearance. It has natural healing properties and antibacterial agents to cleanse pores and rejuvenate the skin, soothing the blemishes.

How to use it?

You can use Aloe Vera in different ways to fade dark spots slowly and effectively.

  • Cut fresh Aloe Vera leaf from the plant, take the pulp out from the middle of the leaf and apply this gel onto your skin daily to lighten dark spots.
  • You can also drink 2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera juice daily to keep the skin healthy from the inside.


4. Potato

Potato is also famous for its bleaching properties and is often used to fade dark circles and blemishes. Juice from raw potatoes can also be used to lighten discoloration due to excessive sun exposure or acne scarring.

How to use it?

  • You can simply slice a potato into thin slices and rub it on your skin for a while. Let the potato slices rest on your face for a few minutes and wash it off. Do this twice a day.
  • You can mix honey and lemon with potato juice (make sure to use raw potato) to make a pack and apply it on the affected areas. Keep it on for 10 minutes and wash it off.


3. Vitamin- E

Vitamin E is one of the best ingredients used in most skin enriching products. It is a great source of anti-oxidants which not only help in repairing damaged cells but also strengthens new cells. Vitamin E is an effective cleansing agent which can help in removing dead dull skin on the face.

How to use it?

  • You can either use Almond oil to massage your face daily, or, you can use Vitamin-E directly on your skin. Take a Vitamin-E capsule and empty its contents on a plate. Simply apply this onto the dark spots and wash it off after 5-10 minutes.
  • You can also include foods rich in Vitamin-E like nuts (almonds, peanuts, pine nuts), sunflower seeds, wheat germ oil, and dried apricots.


2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has malic acid, which gives it antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. This is a big part of what makes it so good for your skin. Many people swear by it for controlling pimples. ACV is strong on the acidic side, so for use on our face, it needs to be diluted.

How to use it?

Mix half parts of ACV and water. Using a cotton bud, apply this solution on to the dark spots. Keep it on for 20 minutes and wash off with normal water. Repeat this daily.

When you apply it topically, the lactic acid in milk works to gradually diminish the skin pigmentation leading to brighter complexion. Honey, has anti-bacterial properties, so it’s great for acne treatment and prevention. Also, it is extremely moisturizing which helps in giving a glow to the skin and anti-oxidants present in honey, help in slowing down aging.

How to use it?

Simply take half a tablespoon of honey and a table spoon of milk in a bowl, mix it together. Apply this paste to the affected areas and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse it off with normal water.
