Fungi are a type of microorganism that are ubiquitous and proliferate rapidly if provided favorable conditions to grow in. There are innumerable species of fungi living everywhere and numerous are even on your skin. They can stay there for a long period of time and cause no harm. However, some day some factors may cause them to aggravate into infections if we do not take proper care of ourselves. And even after that, sometimes we just cannot seem to stop them from creating a ruckus on our skin. To do our best to not give them a wide berth, we can follow the simple 10 ways that are mentioned below.

10. Maintaining hygiene

Fungi have their favorite regions on our skin where they love to breed, and spread their little family. Those special areas will include mainly your feet, inner thighs, groin, underarms, and all other folds of your body. The folds hold moisture, and stay damp most of the time, and that is the ideal environment for the growth of fungus.

If you’ve got infection in any of these areas, there is no need to get frightened of it as it seems very common as we wear shoes, snug clothes during the majority of the day. What you need to do to get rid of the infection is try to maintain a very good hygiene.

Keeping all those special areas clean and dry should be your top priority as it would help to stop them from spreading out. Scrubbing your skin time to time, and removing all the dead skin should be the next thing in your mind since dead skin is another reason for their expansion.

Next step should be to wear lose fitting clothes for a while, and let your skin breathe. Remember, skin is the largest organ of your body and hence it needs to breathe as well. Wearing socks, and shoes with wet feet should be strictly avoided. You should always try to keep yourself dry to prevent any more infections to develop.

9. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar has incredible medicinal properties, and is one of the most popular home remedies to treat fungal infections. Due to its excellent antimicrobial properties, apple cider vinegar helps in killing the fungus causing the infection. It penetrates deep into the affected area of the skin, and works like a charm in skin regeneration, and repair. The mild acidic nature of vinegar (acetic acid) helps arresting the infection from spreading, and boosts speedy recuperation.


Vinegar has been used since old times for cleaning, and disinfecting, treating nail fungus, lice, warts, and ear infections. It has marvelous antiseptic properties, and helps kill pathogens, including fungus.

To treat it externally: The infected area must be cleansed properly with an antiseptic soap first. Since apple cider vinegar is very strong, you would need to dilute it first with an equal amount of water in order to protect your skin from burning. Then you can either apply it on the affected skin area with a soft cotton ball or you can take it in a spray bottle, and spray it over the infected area. You should massage the affected area gently. You should leave it on for 30 minutes. After that, you can pat dry the area nicely with a towel. This should be repeated 2-4 times a day until the symptoms get better, and the fungus is removed completely.

To treat it internally, 1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar can be taken in a glass of warm water once or twice daily.

This home remedy disrupts the pH balance of the infected skin, and impedes with the growth of fungi on the skin.

8. Garlic

Garlic is easily available, and has brilliant anti-fungal, antibacterial, antibiotic properties to boast. Raw garlic is a simple, and potent anti-fungal agent, and can be used in the diet as well as topically to attain a speedy recovery from your fungal infections. Even a garlic bath can help to get rid of the infection very well.


  • Take 2 garlic cloves, and crush them to make a paste. You can either apply this paste directly on the affected skin or you can add a few drops of olive oil to it so that you do not feel the burning that much. Leave the paste on for next 30-60 minutes. Then wash the area thoroughly with tepid water, and pat dry the skin. This process can be repeated twice daily until you do away with the infection.

  • For a garlic bath, add chopped cloves of garlic to a 30 minute bath.
  • You can also try making a wonder remedy by mixing some crushed garlic cloves in honey. Honey diminishes the stinging of garlic, and also softens the skin. The anti-fungal properties of garlic does all the magic of relieving you from the infection.

7. Turmeric

Turmeric is scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties which is why we should add turmeric in our diet daily. You can boil a cup of milk along with a teaspoon of turmeric in it. Add some honey, and drink it while it is still warm. This healthy practice will empower your immune system many folds, and prevent any kind of infection to appear.


Alternatively, you can apply the juice of freshly ground turmeric root on the infected skin area, and leave it overnight. In the morning, wash it off gently with lukewarm water. Continue with this until the infection gets better, and you get back your beautiful skin.

6. Yogurt

Plain, unsweetened yogurt with live, active cultures is a remarkable remedy for treating various types of skin infections caused by both bacteria, and fungus. The live cultures, and probiotics present in yogurt can help in increasing the numbers of beneficial bacteria, and arrest the growth of fungi by producing lactic acid.


You can soak a cotton ball in plain, and unsweetened yogurt, and apply it on the infected skin area. Leave it for an hour, and then rinse it off with tepid water. Pat dry the area with a towel. This can be repeated twice a day until the infected area gets cleared. In case of vaginal infection, you can dip a tampon in yogurt, and insert it in the vagina for 2-3 hours, twice a day.

Plus, having two to three cups of this yogurt daily in your diet is extremely helpful even if you do not have any infection.

5. Coconut oil

Simple, pure coconut oil or extra virgin coconut oil, both of them works as a wonderful natural cure for fungal infections. The presence of medium-chained fatty acids act as fungicides, and keep a check for further spread of the infection.


Coconut oil is light, and not greasy, and therefore, very pleasant when you massage on the affected part of the skin. You can also apply it on fingernails, and toenails if they are infected. You can repeat this twice a day, and for a few months to attain a long lasting relief. It also soothes the skin, and prevents the accumulation of moisture.

4. Tea Tree Oil

One of the best natural remedies is tea tree oil which has potent activity against various types of fungal infections. It is a very strong essential oil, and hence you would need to dilute it with water or olive oil first. Apply the mixture on the infected part of your skin twice or thrice daily for best results. The antiseptic property of tea tree oil will stop the infection to spread further. You can also mix three parts of tea tree oil with one part of aloevera gel, and rub the mixture on the affected skin area, twice daily. Note: Pregnant women must not use tea tree oil for treatment.
